Dear Expert,

What should I do with a mutual fund that has greatly increased in value? Should I approach it like a stock and get out while I'm ahead, or should I keep it?

Expert Answer:

If a fund has been performing well, and the manager is still there and if you still have a place in your asset mix for this type of fund, I see no reason whatsoever to change the position. First, you might trigger taxable gains (in a taxable account) and you could incur additional trading costs or commissions. If the holding still makes sense, I would be inclined to keep it.
