Satish Rai, who oversees an estimated $250 billion as chief investment officer of TD Asset Management Inc., is retiring from the firm in January 2015. After a six-month transition period, he'll pass the CIO torch to TDAM vice-chair Bruce Cooper, who currently leads the fundamental equity, quantitative equity and asset-allocation teams within TDAM.

Cooper, who joined the investment team in 1993, has worked for TDAM in both Toronto and the United Kingdom. He has managed Canadian, U.S. and overseas equities across a variety of mandates. A CFA charterholder, he received a bachelor of commerce degree from Queen's University in 1988, and a master's degree in political science from McGill University in 1991.

"Bruce is a strategic leader with deep investment industry experience and is devoted to the development of investment talent at TDAM," said Paul Orlander, president of TD Mutual Funds, in a letter discussing the transition, which was provided today to Morningstar. "We are thrilled that Satish's successor comes from within his leadership team." TDAM's assets under management include $87 billion in mutual funds.

Rai, who is in his early 50s, is also a senior vice-president of TD Bank Financial Group and manages TD's pension fund. He has spent his entire career with the TD organization. A TDAM official told Morningstar that Rai isn't leaving TDAM to join another investment firm.

Rai has held the CIO role since 2010, although the equity and fixed-income teams have reported to him since 2003. He joined TD Bank in 1986 as a computer programmer after graduating with a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Waterloo.

In 1987, Rai moved over to TD's investment-management unit, which later became TDAM. Before being promoted to head of fixed income in 1990, the year he also received his CFA designation, he worked in a variety of roles including equity analyst.

Even as he took on much broader responsibilities, Rai remained on the portfolio- management team for TD Canadian Bond  , the company's flagship fixed-income fund. His tenure as a co-manager will probably end in December.

The four other managers on the $10.5-billion fund are Rob Pemberton, TDAM's current head of fixed income, along with Olga Bylaard, David McCulla and Chris Case.
