Why Did It Catch Our Eye?

Brandes Global Small Cap Equity Fund’s strong risk-adjusted returns over the short and long term stand out relative to peers. It has been the top-performing fund over the last one and three years and maintains a top decile ranking over the last five and 10 years.

What Is It?

The fund’s benchmark-agnostic, value style looks to buy companies with a market capitalization below US$2.5 billion trading below their intrinsic values. A four-person small-cap investment committee with diverse experience manages the fund.

Why Is It on the List?

This investment team’s ability to independently assess each security’s business value and construct risk-controlled portfolios stands out among the fewer than 50 actively managed global small-cap funds from which Canadians can choose. It has one of the strongest downside capture ratios over the last three and 10 years, demonstrating its ability to offer some downside protection. With less than 30% of assets in the U.S., the fund’s global nature also stands out—half of its peers have at least 50% in the U.S..
